Lord, what is man that thou takest knowledge of him!
Or the son of man that thou makest account of him!

Man is like to vanity:
His days are as a shadow that passeth away.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

At the end of March 1967 Bravo Company, 1/12 Cavalry, was brought in from the field for a rest at the 1st Cavalry Division's base camp near An Khe. The base was defended by a series of strong points around its perimeter, and Bravo 1/12 was given responsibility for one of them: LZ CHARLES.

On 09 April LZ CHARLES was subjected to an attack by sappers. Although the NVA troops penetrated the perimeter, they were kicked out again - but at the cost of 8 Americans dead and many more wounded. The dead were

  • SGT Dale E. Milam, Prosperity, WV
  • CPL Cario Fuller, Benton, AR
  • CPL Glenn J. Hlavacek, Chicago, IL
  • CPL James F. Madden, Brewton, AL
  • CPL Charles A. Stoken, Grand Rapids, MI
  • PFC Rodney C. Edwards, Columbiaville, MI
  • PFC William C. Madison, Memphis, TN
  • PFC Ronald M. Thomas, Lewiston, ME
On 01 June 1967 the fight at LZ CHARLES resulted in a ninth death - Bravo Company's commanding officer, Captain Joseph A. Tomko of Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, died of wounds received that night.
