I will forever remember you as I last saw you: "An R.O.T.C. cadet at Redford High School, Class of 1968; a fun guy with a great smile and wonderful sense of humor ... a life ended much too soon.

Veteran's Day, November 2001 in Santa Barbara, California

The Traveling Wall was brought to Santa Barbara, California for several days preceeding Veteran's Day in November 2001. My husband, Richard, and I live in this beautiful place, and I had come to visit with you and my brother's friends in the early evening while there was still daylight. The Wall stood at Cabrillo Park, parallel to the Pacific Ocean and facing East towards the mountains. We had lit candles in remembrance and had stepped back several yards from Panel 10 to watch the sun setting behind the Wall. Silvery horizontal streaks of clouds were reflecting bands of red as the sun descended into the ocean, and we remarked how much it resembled an American flag...how appropriate it seemed.

As we stood and watched, a young man and woman passed between us and the Wall, their beautiful black and silver Siberian Husky dog tugging them along. I felt a tug in my heart as that simple scene transported me back to a memory at Redford High School's football field in Detroit, Michigan: The uniformed R.O.T.C. colorguard leading the way onto the field before the game, followed by our silver and white Siberian Husky team mascot. A shout rose in my throat, and I said aloud, "Go, Huskies!"

Oh cousin, how I wish to have known you! The very subject of you brought such emotion from my dad. Even now, I well up at the thought of how much my dad would cry. It was my dad's wish before he died to make it to Washington D.C. to see your name inscribed on the Wall and he made it! I now know you are both reunited and how I cannot wait until the day I can finally meet you and reunite with my dad.

With sincere love and gratitude, I thank you for everything you were to me, my family and our country.

From his cousin,
