John's Home of Record is Houston, Texas, but he was from Midland, Texas. He was a 1965 graduate of Midland Lee High School. He was cited as one of the best golfers to play for the Midland Lee Rebels. He later attended Texas Tech in Lubbock. He was nicknamed "Munko" and "Johanna" and he had the ability to make others laugh. A relative wrote of him "The world is a sadder place ever since his death and I will never get over it." He joined the Army in Houston and trained as a medic. May this memorial keep his name, his personality and his laughter alive. May his sacrifice never be forgotten. |
A Note from The Virtual WallOn 5-6 September 1968, seven Companies of the 101st Airborne Division conducted a cordon and search operation directed at locating and destroying the 7th VC Battalion. During the night of 6 September 1968 the 7th VC broke through the Alpha 3/187 position. Although Alpha 3/187 held its position against the much larger enemy force, medic John Kelly and 31 other American soldiers died in fierce hand-to-hand combat.
