Donald Thorpe Deere was born in Roscoe, Texas and was raised in Snyder, Texas. He was a 1962 graduate of Snyder High School. He trained in Special Forces. He perished on May 17, 1966 while serving as advisor to the South Vietnamese Army. His body was not recovered. He is remembered by the Permian Basin Vietnam Veterans' Memorial in Midland, Texas. May his sacrifice never be forgotten.

Notes from The Virtual WallThen-SP4 Donald Deere was assigned to a Mobile Strike Force unit based at Detachment A-302 at Bien Hoa. On 17 May 1966 the unit was committed to an area about 14 kilometers west-southwest of te Special Forces camp at Loc Ninh, where the MSF engaged an estimated battalion-sized force. SP4 Deere was wounded, and was hit a second time during a rescue attempt. Intense enemy activity forced the MSF to withdraw without further rescue attempts.SP4 Deere was classed as Missing in Action and was promoted while in that status. At the first annual review of his case an Army board concluded that all available evidence indicated that Deere had been killed in the action, and the Secretary of the Army therefore approved a Presumptive Finding of Death on 18 May 1967. SP5 Deere's remains have not been repatriated. |
