S/Sgt Spicer was the 1st Platoon Sergeant of Company A-9-2, Fort Jackson, S.C., while I was in basic training (28 March 1966-27 May 1966. I was in the 2nd Platoon but I came to know him as he taught the entire company numerous military classes. He was a great guy. At the closing of one of his classes, he said these words: "Before long, many of us will go to Vietnam - some of us won't return". The way he said it, the tone in his voice - I think he had a gut feeling that he wasn't going to return. After Basic, I kept in touch with some of the personnel from Co A-9-2. One of them told me about S/Sgt Spicer. It has been 40 years since Basic - I still remember S/Sgt Spicer and many of the great personnel who trained us. I located one of my sergeants - a Sergeant Wiltherspoon. He now lives in Macon, Georgia. I plan to travel to Macon to see him - and thank him. Thank him for being an inspiration.
