I served with Sgt. Charles Smeltzer in the 2nd Plt, B Co, 1/18th Inf, 1st Infantry Division. He was a squad leader at the time of his death. He was an excellent soldier. His bravery and dedication are a credit to himself, his family, his country, and the 1st Infantry Division. The two photos were taken while on patrol in late 1969 or early 1970 with an "Instamatic" camera. These are the only two decent photos I have of him.

I was Charles Smeltzer's platoon leader in Nov 69 to early Dec 69 until I was injured. Charles was a very honorable and professional soldier and an outstanding human being. I can't say enough to express my admiration for him. He had an amazing sense of humor and was wonderful to be around, I can still remember his laugh. You can just see from his photograph that he had a good soul. After release from the hospital I was a platoon leader with Alfa Company and I remember well receiving the radio call informing me of his death, a sad day I still remember.
From a friend and comrade, |
Chuck was one of the more likeable and intelligent guys that I met in Vietnam. He always had a smile and a good thing to say. He was fun to be around because he knew how to have fun and that was infectious. I think of him often because to me, he represents amazing potential that never had the opportunity to be fulfilled. I only knew him in war and I still feel the loss. I cannot imagine the loss his family must still feel.
