05 Sep 1999 John was a very best friend of mine, who communicated with me in detail while he was in Vietnam. We were closer than friends, but only shared a kiss.... We had plans for the future, however he was 18 years old and I was 17 before he was drafted. I may say, I lost the best friend in my life ... through this war. Linda Coleman maltese@nb.net Marine Pvt. John E. Reynolds was killed in action last Wednesday in Vietnam. A son of Mr. and Mrs Carl E. Reynolds, R. D. 2, Linesville. He died Wednesday August 7, 1968, from fragmentation wounds by a hostile grenade while on patrol with his assault squad which provided security around the air base in DaNang. Pfc. Reynolds was born Oct. 8, 1949. He was a 1966 graduate of LCS High School. He enlisted in the Marine Corps Oct. 12, 1967, and completed basic training at Parris Island, S.C. He left Camp Pendleton, Calif, on March 22, 1968 for Vietnam. From the Linesville Herald, Thursday, August 15, 1968. Vietnam Day by day we fight like mad, But way down deep I'm awful sad, Vietnam is an awful place, To try to kill and leave no trace. With steel pots upon our head, We fight like mad and duck hot lead. We patrol and kill V. C. Just to keep America free. Our Marine Corps color is gold; It shows the world that we are bold. And the other color is red; It represents the blood we've shed. Thirteen months of fighting Cong, And you can't do one thing wrong. They give an order to take a hill, You say to yourself, will I have to kill? You know the Cong are someplace near, But whatever you do, you cannot fear. So they say the Cong are mean But you're the Marine with the M-16 During patrol we think of home. But there again I'm not alone. 16 Jan 2004 Looking through the pages of my old home town one of the first things that caught my eye was the dedication to a young United States Marine who was killed in Vietnam. First and foremost what caught my eye was this man's name. I went to Linesville to school and was friends with some of his relatives. Shirley was a couple years older than me and Nata, who I was very fond of along with the other Junior High cheerleaders. I miss the old friends and am proud to say that I was a United States Marine who served for 20 years and retired with the Emblem of the finest fighting force in the world.
