Command Sergeant Major William H. Clevenger was assigned to the 7th battalion, 11th Field Artillery Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, while I was the Battalion Commander. I consider it an honor and a privilege to have served with him. He was the embodiment of what the perfect Sergeant Major should be. He and I traveled by helicopter to the many firebases where elements of our battalion were employed. Regardless of the hazards involved, he never hesitated to go where he was needed. When we visited the many bases, we would separate and he would talk with the noncommissioned officers and enlisted men and I with the battery officers. He was a natural communicator to the point where the noncommissioned officers were never reluctant to share problems or potential problems with him so that solutions could be implemented. Just as important, he and I could communicate and I had complete unlimited trust in his judgment and recommendations. He was the finest Sergeant Major I have ever known in over 32 years of service in the Regular Army, both enlisted and as an officer. Although we lost him over three decades ago, the pain of that loss is still with me as I write this.
